Milly was a much loved pet shared by Chris and Laura who came to much grief whilst swimming in her favourite water hole. She was dragged from the water and appeared paralyzed.

So we then transported her back to the house for a rest while we rang the vets, No answer on Kilcoy Vets phone and Woodford Vets were unavailable to help.

After about an hour of getting home Milly was walking around and even ran out to greet a visitor. She had Raindrop Technique and Di-Gize Essential oils applied and I thought they had worked wonders.

So we left her overnight but by morning she had deteriorated.  I  tried the vets again and got a hold of the Kilcoy Vet so we took her into the clinic with me holding her in the back seat of my station wagon. She was a mess and could not move coherently so thrashed around violently and needed much restraining.

We arrived at the vets and Milly was stretchered into the surgery by Chris and the vet. where she was placed on the cold floor of the operating room and left for a half hour while she attended another customer with finalizing their bill and plenty of small chit chat.

When Milly was finally seen to we were told she had the classic symptoms of paralysis tick bite and if we did not treat her for that, at an estimated cost of around $1200 for a 60kg dog, then we would be strongly encouraged to have her destroyed.

I did not think it was a tick and questioned her verdict insistently but she assured us that Milly would be fine if administered the Tick antisyrum because her lungs were fine and her heart was good and her gums were pink so she should respond really well. We left her thinking we would see her again.

At 7:00am she was found dead in her cage by the vet who rang us and apologized for the bad news.

Totally devastated we went to pick up her body for a proper burial at our farm and when we got there Milly was in a black plastic garbage bag out on the back pattio.

It was then made clear to us then, by another vet who was there, that she actually had the symptoms of snake bite and not tick.

Just as we had suspected.

We have since had another vet confirm the symptoms were of a brown snake. Of which there is an anti-vennene albeit expensive it would have saved her life.

As it is the vets insist we still pay $900 for our dead dog.

On a brighter note Milly was buried by her favourite water hole. We held a small ceremony and planted a kauri pine and 2 avocados near her. Milly will Never be forgotten and has made a special mark on the hearts of many.
